Selected pieces translated into English.
To truly reflect upon meanings and allusions sprawled across the pages of Nasamat, enjoyment of wonderful melodies and choruses laden with dhikr carries one only until the door. A deep understanding of the Arabic language is key to entry where familiarity with works in the vast corpus of love and praise poetry offer the only light. To know the experiences of the Folk of the Way is to spark the flame of loving and longing, carrying souls unto love of Allah ﷻ, and love of His Messenger ﷺ. The translations presented below are a humble, flawed attempt upon this path.
Songs
-
Unendingly do souls incline unto you,
your union their rest and respite.Hearts of the Folk of Your love long for you,
and find rest in the enjoyment of meeting you.So have mercy for those lovers, forbearing
love’s covering while passion exposes them.Hearts of the Folk of Your love long for you,
and find rest in the enjoyment of meeting you.So have mercy for those lovers, forbearing
love’s covering while passion exposes them. -
We have come to You with poverty O Possessor of Richness,
and it is You who is eternally generous. We are accustomed to every favour hoped for,
continuous is that from you until our return.Your dishevelled poor ones have become lost,
in Your love as it is the utmost hope & desire. There is in richness none like You,
and in poverty there is no group like us.We see You in every matter manifested,
and none of the matter belongs to us.I concealed Your name out of jealousy, and here I am,
pretending in mountain trails and in every turn.If in all circumstances You are with me,
then I have no need to carry my concerns and worries. You are the Abidingly Real no other than You,
and would that I knew! Who then, is the ‘I’
that I refer to as ‘I’. -
Remain ever present at the door of your Lord and abandon all else,
ask Him for safety from the abode of tribulations.
Let not your heart be distressed as all things will soon fade,
Allah is the Ordainer and this world is constant flux.
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.Your own thoughts and choices, leave them behind
together with your stratagems, and witness He Who sees you.
Your Patron Lord, the Guardian, indeed sees all you do,
entrust your affairs to Him, and maintain the best of opinions.
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.‘If only,’ ‘why,’ and ‘how’—questions asked by fools,
protesting with Allah who created,
destined and decreed everything in reality,
O heart, take heed, and abandon your obsessions!
let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.You and all of creation are mere servants,
and God does with us what He wills,
Your stress and your sorrows—woe to you!—bring no benefit,
destiny has foregone so be at peace with it.
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.The Exalted has guaranteed necessary provisions
in the revealed book, a light for mankind.
So satisfaction is obligatory and displeasure forbidden,
contentment is comfort, while covetousness is insanity!
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.That which is meant for others will never come your way,
while that which has been portioned for you will soon be attained.
So concern yourself only with your Lord and what is required of you,
with regards to the obligatory realities and the Protected Sacred Law.
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be.The law of the Chosen One, the Guide and Giver of glad-tidings,
seal of the Prophets, the illuminating full moon.
Peace and blessings of the Almighty Lord upon him,
as long the wind wafts and tilts the branches.
Let not your worries increase, what has been ordained will be. -
I do not have a thing—what do I have from myself?
I worry about my provision, for what? While the Creator provides for me.What do I have that is from me? While I am a mere servant, owned,
and all things are destined, there are no doubts about their becoming realities. My Lord watches over me while my sight is weak,
in the womb and inside the body, from a single drop He fashioned me.In the darkness of the womb He fashioned me from a single drop,
and He made bounties appear for me, bounties of every quality. He created for me water and food and an assortment of favours,
and I grew up without clothing, so He covered me and clothed me.I have not increased except in nakedness, I do not know this from that,
the protective covering of God the Giving, has created nourishment for the soul,The body brings forth milk, we drink and nourish ourselves,
And He made the earth an expanse for me, and the sky a firm ceiling.O my heart trust in Allah for he is the Giver and the Denier,
be content in His preordainment for verily your return is unto Him.All are in the knowledge of Allah, and His choosing in actuality,
your plans are futile—rid me from your plans!I counsel you to be God-conscious in your private and public,
be certain that Allah is present in all places,If Allah bestows benefit upon you, not ever will people harm you,
you’ll be free from all deception if you obey me. -

I shall be a Muslim for all time, and Praise be to the Merciful, eternally. -
You are my duties and my free offerings,
you are my speech and my work,
O You, the direction of my prayer
when I stand to pray.Your beauty lie there before me,
to it I direct my entirety,
Your secret lie in my inner conscience,
and the heart a Mount Sinai of manifestation. In the village I saw fire
one night, so I gave glad-tidings to my folk
saying, “wait here, for perhaps
I might find guidance”I drew close to it, and there it was—
the Fire of The Addressed One (Musa), before me!
Closer still, drawing nigh the
meeting point for my union.Crumbling of my mountains came to pass,
in overwhelming awe of the Manifested, dawning forth a secret, hidden
and understood by one like me.I was the Moses of my era,
since hearing with my whole being.
So in my death is my life,
and in my life is my killing.I am destitute and distressed,
be gentle with my state and lowliness. -
O seeker of Allah, I reiterate my words for you so listen attentively!
For if you understand my words, through them you shall reach Allah. It is upon you, O seeker, to obtain the wine of divine oneness,
and if you want more, forget all other than Him.Repeat the greatest Name, and fold up the universe, you shall prosper,
and plunge into the sea of pre-eternity, for that is the sea of Allah. And be extinct in the One Worshipped, taste the meaning of witnessing
for this existence is but from the light of Allah.The physical realm, the spiritual realm, and the realm of divine power;
all of them are qualities and His Essence is what is named,Towards Him is the end, and from Him is the beginning:
and now He’s manifest, and the universe is clad with His finery. The universe is His mirror and the manifestation of His attributes.
Muhammad ﷺ is the light of the Essence, on him be Allah's blessings.al-῾Alawi speaks words from him accepted,
by which minds wander aimlessly, becoming absent in the Essence of Allah. -
Dawn’s light is from the radiance of his face,
Night’s sparkle is from the glimmer of his blessed strands of hair.He exceeded all the Messengers in merit and rank,
He guided people to the path with his signs and proofsHis lineage is the purest, his stature the noblest,
All Arabs are in his service.Trees walked to him and stones spoke to greet him,
The Moon split upon his signal.A treasure of mercy, a favour of our Lord,
He is the guide of the entire nation, with his sacred law.Gabriel came on the night journey,
and Allah invited him to His Presence. So, our Muhammad, he is our master!
So, honour is ours in obeying him! -
If I were asked, ‘You visited him, with what have you returned?’
O most noble of creation, what would I respond?“Respond ‘We returned with every goodness,
and the branch has united with the root.’”Were it not for you, O splendour of existence,
my life would find no celebration, nor existence,I would have no recital in my prayer,
Nor in my bowing, nor in my prostration.O the nights of pleasure that embrace us!
Return again, that I may once more find verdant life,Return upon us with every goodness,
With the Chosen one, of purest lineage ﷺ -
A thousand prayers of Allah upon the adornment of creation,
He who lived in Taibah and pitched tent in the valley of Zarud.O kings of the district, O noble consortium,
Convey my greeting to the shelter’s antelope. If we are unashamed for you, we are not to be blamed,
Passion and love has overwhelmed us.My Masters, if you do not pity (me) with a meeting,
I’ll die in ecstasy, and for you is a long life.Me, if I don’t crave the Gazelle of Valley an-Naqaa,
What difference is there between my heart and a stone!May Allah ﷻ comfort our moments by Your ﷺ presence,
And quench Your ﷺ valley by a downpour of clouds. -
Chapter One: On Lyrical Love Yearning
1. Is it from recollection of neighbors in the valley of Dhi Salami
That you mix tears with blood as they flow from your eyes?2. Or perhaps sweet breezes blowing from Kadhima's direction?
Or bolts of lightning that flash in the depths of Mount Iddam?3. What's wrong with your eyes? You say, "Stop!"
But that only increases their painful downpour;4. Or your heart? You say, "Wake up!"
But it wanders even further astray in distraction!5. Does someone so flooded with love think it can be hid
Behind such a downpour of tears or a heart's raging fires?6. Without love's passion you would never have wept so over the traces of your beloved's camp,
Nor spent sleepless nights recalling the fragrance of a willow or the mountain your darling walked in.7. Nor would the mere memory of tents and those who dwelt there
Have draped you in mourning clothes, weeping and wasting away.8. How can you deny such a love, when true tears
And real heartbreak testify so strongly against you?9. The sorrow of love has etched two salty troughs down your face
And branded gaunt marks on it as pallid as yellow and blood-red roses.10. How true! In the night a vision of the one I long for came and deprived me of sleep.
But love is famous for impeding pleasures with pain!11. you who fault me for this vestal love, accept my excuse-
Yet if you judged fairly, you would find me blameless.12. May you never have to live like this! I can't even keep it a secret
From my critics, I'm so feverish and lovesick!13. You have given me good advice, but I can't hear it -
A lover's ears are deaf to the outcries of love-critics.14. How can I listen? I don't even trust the counsel of gray hairs,
And everyone knows old age is guileless when it comes to good counsel! -
